BENEFITS, RESEARCH, AND INVESTIGATIONS
(This article is dedicated to my dear patient Emmanuel from USA)
– Doctors refusing to prescribe cannabis because of the lack of further education are still numerous, but many families have again tried successfully on their children.
– CBD-rich oils seem to be a useful tool for improving the social lives of people with autism.
– Until then, what is known is that cannabis could have an impact on the endocannabinoid system and thus increase the production of oxytocin and anandamide. This helps people with autism not to isolate themselves and to feel better in contact with others.
What is autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that alters the social interaction and the environment of the patient. The degree of this disease or the symptoms, and sometimes even the causes, vary, which is why the term ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is used to encompass the three types of disorders with differentiable characteristics:
Autism in the real sense of the term
Unspecified developmental disorders
Today, the causes of autism have still not been determined accurately. However, some scientific theories indicate that they may have a genetic origin. Some scientists also say that the trivalent vaccine, or the ingestion of certain drugs, as well as some environmental contaminants, could be the origin.
The medical cannabis is increasingly used to treat autism, a neurological disease that appears complex development in the early years of the child, and usually lasts a lifetime. This condition is part of a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Characteristics and symptoms of ASD include communication development and abnormal social interaction, and even persistent deficiencies. Also, it is also associated with symptoms such as repetitiveness and a minimal repertoire of behaviors, interests, and activities, such as obsessively adjusting objects or following a particular routine. Symptoms may range from mild to severe.
Medical treatment of autism with cannabis: effects of the research
Research has highlighted the efficacy of medicinal cannabis in treating autism as it improves behavior and communication skills. It has also been found that there is a connection between autism and cannabinoid receptors, such as cannabinoid receptors 2 (CB2) and the endocannabinoid system.
In 2016, a study was conducted with a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with this condition. Thanks to this report, it has been shown that medical cannabis for treating autism can be useful. For six months, the child has been treated with THC and has improved his or her illness such as hyperactivity, lethargy, irritability, and inappropriate speech.
In the United States, a study of mice with behavior similar to that of people with autism revealed differences in behavior between the group of mice that took cannabinoids and the other group that did not take anything. The study suggests that medical cannabis to treat autism may reduce some of the symptoms common to this condition including depression or the ability to focus on one’s activity.
In another study, it was evident that cannabinoids could help correct the behavioral problems associated with Syndrome X, the most well-known genetic cause of autism.
All of these studies attempt to prove the effectiveness of medical cannabis in treating autism. In this regard, Israel, a leading country in therapeutic cannabis research, is implementing a pioneering study of cannabis for therapeutic purposes. Also, Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem will coordinate five health centers where tests will be conducted with 120 children and adults with autism. They will be treated with a high content of CBD form oils.
Currently, there is no way to prevent autism, and the treatments are not fully effective. Thus, medical cannabis to treat autism may be an alternative to reduce or mitigate some of the typical symptoms of this disease, as the studies mentioned above support. The more research on medicinal cannabis proceeds, the more we can find the benefits of cannabinoid therapies for autism and other diseases.
Generally, in my practice I do not use cannabis oil, but in certain cases in which there is a state of anxiety or serious agitation and self-injury, cannabis oil can be a natural therapeutic option.
